Ok.

Ok, guys. Help me out here. Ever since coming back from winter break, I've had no motivation to cook. None. Nada. Zip zap zero. What's going on here? Seriously, I made a huge pot of soup last week, and a stir fry a few days ago, and that's all the cooking I've done. I've been living off of bread and apples, and I'm kind of sick of it. Ok, I'm really sick of it. This is not like me at all-- I usually cook pretty well and semi-fancily-- and it's kind of upsetting to be eating store-bought bread 3x a day.

How do you get your cooking muse back when it's gone? Any cool recipes I should try out?

When I'm at a loss for food to make, I do one of two things. I either buy a new cookbook or I try to veganize a recipe I used to love. Sometimes just trying to do something different helps with the doldrums...

Awww I empathize. I've been in a cooking rut lately too. Not even trawling the internet for inspiration is helping much. Hang in there, we all go through it from time to time!!

When I came back from vacation, my kitchen was cold and empty-seeming. I swear it missed me, and was now mad at me for leaving it. One good meal did it.

Then lately, I had a relapse. Here's my suggestion, it worked for me. Go to a store and splurge on something you love but don't normally buy. Vanilla beans did the trick for me. I also have some saffron I have to use.. hm..

Other than that, it also helps to invite someone over to cook with you.

One of my favorite things to do is go to the bookstore and look at new cookbooks (even if I don't buy). Sometimes it's just great to go out to a nice dinner somewhere new, or try a new ingredient.

That said, how's Heidelberg? Have you done any traveling?

Try baking. Baking is always fun because making sweets is always fun. That usually gets me back into the swing of things.

Look through some cook books! They can be very inspiring.

oh no!! I know what you mean, especially when I have loads of schoolwork (and little time to bake); but you have to just get back in the kitchen, and do it!! I just posted my recipe for apple-cinnamon-oat muffins, if you're interested :0)

Sometimes it may just help not to "help", just leave it alone. Cooking is like art or writing (if you love it), and if the inspiration and spirit seems to be gone, do not chase it... Let it go and take a look at what your heart really wishes right now :)

Cooking spirit is like love, if you try to force it, it may disappear...

So if anything else fails, just relax and do something completely different you wished to do since long time, maybe just a long nap, a good book, a glass of wine or a walk in the park, without any obligations?

Everyone's advice is pretty good really. I would second the going out and buying something special to cook with and also the not stressing about it too much advice.

Maybe try to focus on your nutrition for a bit - throw in some greens and other veggies with your bread, maybe make the odd tofu burger etc. and just wait for the inspiration to come back. It will.

A couple weeks ago, I checked out Rick Bayless' Mexican Kitchen from the library and that got me all excited. I say the library is the way to cure the doldrums because you can check out something more impulsively then you would buy. Also, I can't stop thinking about variations for the sausage recipe on Everyday Dish. And pudding. I recently figured out how to make radical vegan pudding and now if I'm not thinking about sausages than I'm probably thinking about pudding.

Man, Anna,... I'm so sorry to hear! But if you tried inviting friends over to cook together, or to have dinner together, or even put a party, there's a goal and you might be able to cook more that way.

Hearing compliments about how well you cook will also motivate you to keep cooking.

I wish I was there to eat your food :P You can do it.

& I miss you.

I can't offer any advice here, since I'm in the exact same boat as you! Since coming home, everything's been off kilter- my appetite, my desire to cook or bake, my blogging, my work... chalk it up to winter and post-travel doldrums! I know your muse will be back, though, you are just too talented for this to last too long!

I like to take the bus or mass transit to a neighborhood I have never been to and walk around and then be reminded that there's a whole world out there. ;-) Especially ethnic ones where you can find cool foods you've never even heard of before.

An easy recipe I like to make when I'm feeling lazy is chickpea salad sandwhiches. I make mine with chickpeas, tahini, dried dill, diced onion, diced celery and a squirt of mustard.

You want a motivation? just be yourself. be inspired by the surrounding, by the people around. I think that will help.
